Top Things to Do in Winter Park in December
1. Skiing & Snowboarding
With crisp mountain air and award-winning terrain, it’s no surprise that Winter Park is a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding. This is especially true during the month of December when we experience an average of 35 inches of snowfall! Feel free to visit one of four great locations: Winter Park Resort, Granby Ranch, Devil’s Thumb Ranch, or Jonas Pass.
2. Ice Skating
Are you looking for something a little more mellow? Spend an afternoon ice skating with the family. From outdoor ice ponds to full-size hockey rinks, there are plenty of places to enjoy this timeless tradition. One of our favorites is the Village Ice Rink at Winter Park Resort. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. and offers free lessons at 4 o’clock.
Local Tip: After a few laps around the rink, take the kids to see Santa Claus. He visits the Village each December and even brings along some holiday carolers.
3. Sleigh Rides
A romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride is the perfect activity for couples. Sign up for the 60 to 90-minute excursion where you’ll traverse snow-covered meadows before disembarking to a crackling campfire for hot chocolate and marshmallows. Or, try the 45-minute dinner sleigh ride which ends with some Colorado home cooking at a cozy dining hall. Don’t forget to snap a few photos for your Christmas card!
4. Holiday Shopping
If you still have a few things to cross off your Christmas list, head to Cooper Creek Square in downtown Winter Park. This outdoor shopping mall boasts a large selection of gift stores, clothing outlets, and restaurants in one convenient location. They also offer free activities like carriage rides and live music.
5. Festival of Trees
Each year in early December, the Christmas Festival of Trees draws over 500 people to Fraser, Colorado. During this fun-filled evening, children and adults enjoy Christmas music, a visit from Santa, and plenty of food and beverages. Over 20 local non-profit organizations decorate and display Christmas trees that are available to purchase during a live auction.
