The first step to horseback riding in Winter Park is choosing a local business for your adventure. Choose from guided horseback riding trips, lessons, wagon rides and sleigh rides offered at different stables around Winter Park.

Rusty Spurr Ranch

For a unique experience Rusty Spurr Ranch began in 2001 with the idea to deliver the most authentic and unique horseback experience in the Rocky Mountains.  The current owners have a passion for Western heritage, ranching and horsemanship culminated in a small, family-run business where everyone participates in the day-to-day operations.  Check out the large variety of group trail rides, cattle drives, private rides with guide and team building activities or a combination of saddle and paddle.  The ranch is located a quick 40 minute drive from Winter park - perfect way to spend the day!

Rocky Mountain Stables

We recommend Rocky Mountain Stables, Northern Colorado’s largest horse outfitter since 1958. The Winter Park riding stable has a location at Snow Mountain Ranch and offers visitors the opportunity to experience riding – as early settlers did – in the natural beauty of the Colorado Rockies. The 5,200-acre area is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and has 60 miles of trails for riding. Let their wranglers guide you across trails that take you by beaver ponds, mountain streams and lush forests of pine trees and mountain flowers. They are open year-round and have activities for all seasons. Plus, Snow Mountain Ranch is Rocky Mountain Stable’s only location with wagon, sleigh, and carriage rides daily! Reservations are required.

Insider tip:

While long pants and boots are the normal attire, shorts and tennis shoes will work on shorter rides. A light jacket or sweatshirt is a good idea to bring along in the afternoon. You can always tie extra clothing onto the saddle and keep it just in case!

Horseback Riding Trails

Many of Winter Park’s trails are multi-use and can accommodate horseback riding. There are national forests, wilderness areas and even the national park to explore. Rocky Mountain National Park is horse-friendly, with almost 80% of trails open to commercial and private horse use. Just make sure to check the list of areas closed to stock use before you go horseback riding in the park.

Other areas to take your horse out riding include the Byers Peak Wilderness and Vasquez Peak Wilderness near Winter Park. Consider the Byers Peak Trail for panoramic views from the 12,800-foot summit, the highest peak in the wilderness area. The Arapaho National Recreation Area near Granby also has scenic horseback riding trails such as the Doe Creek Trail.
