Planning a Winter Park ski trip for the 2026/2027 season? Here is what has actually changed, what to plan around, and how to book the right home base. There is no such thing as a bad day on the slopes here, but there is such a thing as a badly timed one.
The Headline: Weekends Now Start an Hour Earlier
The single biggest change for 2026/2027 is beautifully simple. Lifts open at 8:00am on Saturdays and Sundays, from December 5, 2026 through April 4, 2027, conditions permitting.
That is a free extra hour on the best snow of the day, every weekend day, all season. And it quietly changes the math on where you stay: an 8:00am first chair is a hard ask if you are driving up from Denver that morning, and an easy walk if you slept here the night before.
When Does Winter Park Open for 2026/2027?
There is no fixed date. Winter Park opens as soon as conditions allow rather than committing to a calendar day, which usually means late October or November. For reference, last season the mountain ran October 31 through April 19.
Mary Jane keeps her own schedule. Winter Park's famous bump-and-tree mountain typically opens in January and closes earlier in spring. If the Jane is why you are coming, target mid-January through mid-March.

Three Dates to Plan Around
If you hold an Ikon Base Pass or Ikon Session Pass, these are blacked out at Winter Park for 2026/2027:
- December 26 to 30, 2026, the entire week between Christmas and New Year
- January 16 and 17, 2027, MLK weekend
- February 13 and 14, 2027, Presidents Day weekend
The full Ikon Pass has no blackout days. Those three windows are also the busiest and priciest of the season no matter what pass you hold, so shifting a week either side saves money and lift lines.
Blacked out and still want to ski? Granby Ranch is twenty minutes up the road and a genuinely good alternative, especially with young kids.
Winter Park Resort: What You Get Now
Winter Park Resort has been operating since 1940, making it one of Colorado's longest continually running ski areas and the closest major mountain destination to Denver. Over 85 years in, it is still the mountain Denver treats as its own.
The upgrades from recent seasons are now fully bedded in, which for you means they simply work:
- A 10-passenger gondola in place of the old Gemini Express, plus a high-speed quad replacing the Endeavor and Discovery lifts, and an additional Magic Carpet for beginners.
- A $37 million snowmaking system now several seasons into service. The practical result is more terrain open sooner, a longer season on both ends, and better early-season conditions than natural snowfall alone would deliver.
- Expanded terrain, including steeper runs in the Mary Jane chutes and improvements across the Mary Jane and Parsenn Bowl areas.
- A rebuilt base area with better walkability between neighborhoods, updated parking, new dining, and modern ski school facilities at the Discovery Park learning center.
The scale, for context: 3,081 skiable acres across seven distinct territories, from wide-open beginner terrain at Discovery Park to the expert ungroomed steeps of the Cirque.
Granby Ranch: The Family Alternative
Twenty minutes from Winter Park Resort, Granby Ranch is a smaller, calmer hill and a much less intimidating place to put a five-year-old on skis. Short lift lines, manageable terrain, and the ability to actually keep eyes on your kids.
Recent seasons have brought a 400-foot covered Stagecoach conveyor lift opening up more beginner terrain, extended night skiing, an automated snowmaking system running roughly 30% more efficiently along with new snowcats, expanded South Glade terrain for off-trail skiing, and a renovated Base Lodge with more dining and a rebuilt Ski & Ride School.
It is also the smart play on Ikon blackout days, when Winter Park is at its busiest and most expensive.

Getting Here: The Ski Train
The Amtrak Winter Park Express is the only ski train in the country that drops you at a resort base, roughly 100 feet from the lifts. 2026/2027 dates and fares have not been announced yet, and Amtrak has made its announcement in early November for each of the last two seasons, so expect news around then.
Not taking the train? Home James runs door-to-door airport shuttles from Denver, which beats driving Berthoud Pass after a travel day. Note that Uber and Lyft are unreliable in the valley, so arrange transport in advance rather than assuming.

Your Booking Order of Operations
- Book lodging first. Holiday weeks and blackout weekends sell out earliest.
- Check your pass blackout dates against your travel window.
- Reserve ski school if anyone is learning, and remember lift tickets are separate from lessons.
- Book the sell-outs: tubing times, guided tours and clinics.
- Arrange gear delivery and airport transport.
- Make dinner reservations for the nights you care about, and check closed days first.
