Enthusiastic fisherman are aware that Colorado is a fantastic destination for trout fishing. This is particularly the case in Grand County, where there are more than a thousand miles of rivers and streams ready to be discovered! Head over to Winter Park or Fraser and take pleasure in wading, boating or casting from the bank. The possibilities are limitless in almost every season!  Here are a few of our top Winter Park fishing locations to check out.

1. Fraser River

The Fraser River is among the best fishing locations in the area.  It's the primary tributary of the Colorado River and has a mostly flat terrain, featuring riffles, runs and tailouts that lead to deep pools.  This river is a fully wild fishery, hosting some sizable fish that typically measure between 12 and 15 inches.  You can find public access along the Fraser Canyon and just behind the Safeway supermarket in Fraser.

2. Granby 

Another awesome spot for fishing near Winter Park is Granby. There are gold-medal tributary on the Colorado and Fraser. Here, fishermen can reel in brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout while enjoying a beautiful and peaceful environment. 

3. Nearby Creek Fishing Spots

If you're an anglers seeking a cozy, small-stream fishing experience, there are 4 hidden gems away from the crowds where you can enjoy the woods and peaceful natural beauty of in Winter Park and the neighboring towns.

Vasquez Creek is an ideal spot.  It's a fantastic escape from the hustle and bustle, and you can catch various types of trout depending on how far you go upriver. 

Muddy Creek is located further north, near Kremmling and the Wolford Reservoir.  You can park close to the dam and enjoy some tailwater fishing.

Willow Creek is just outside Granby on Highway 125, tucked away in a special part of the Arapahoe National Forest.  There's a lot of stunning forest around where you can reel in brown, rainbow and brook trout.

St. Louis Creek is located in Fraser, providing public access to the Arapahoe National Forest for a delightful small stream fishing adventure!

4. Lake Fishing

In the nearby Grand Lake area, you can find 4 amazing lakes that offer a range of fishing experiences!  Lake Granby, one of the largest lakes in Colorado, is a top-notch fishing spot with 40 miles of beautiful shoreline.  Then there are the two sister lakes: Grand Lake, which is just a short walk from downtown Grand Lake and was formed by glaciers, providing 500 acres of water to explore.  Shadow Mountain Reservoir connects to Grand Lake through narrow waterways and has a shallow area perfect for fishing any time of day.  If you looking for a hidden retreat, check out Monarch Lake. All these lakes are home to trout and kokanee salmon, keeping anglers busy throughout the season.  Lake Granby, Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake are known for some of the best fishing in Grand County, especially for trophy trout. You can rent a pontoon or join a guided fishing tour at Beacon Landing Marina.  Other marinas around the lakes, like Trail Ridge Marina also offer rod rentals, equipment, supplies and boat rentals.

During winter, anglers can enjoy ice fishing on all three lakes once they freeze over. The annual Three Lakes Ice Fishing Contest draws hundreds of anglers and tourists to these lakes.

Colorado Fishing License and Rules

If you're 16 or older, you will need to grab a fishing license to fish or catch fish in Colorado waters.  Kids under 16 can catch a full bag and possession limit without a license. Residents who are 64 and older can snag a fishing license for just $1. Everyone, including kids, needs to have a second-rod stamp if they're using a second line. You can get one-day fishing licenses for both residents and non-residents. Colorado fishing licenses are available online or in-person at an agent office or one of our local businesses.
