Exploring the Vasquez Peak Wilderness

About the Area

Within the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, there's so much land worth exploring. Here, you can find Byers Peak, James Peak, Ptarmigan Peak, and Eagles Nest Wilderness. When you stay in Winter Park or Fraser, we recommend taking a short trip to Vasquez Peak. You can find this vast wilderness just southwest of Winter Park within the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. It's situated between Berthoud Pass to the east and Fraser Experimental Forest to the west. At the top, this mountain boasts an elevation of almost 13,000 feet!

What You Can See Here

With over 12,000 acres of land, the wilderness is nothing short of impressive. Be sure to take a walk along the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, making up seven of the 15 miles of trails. Enjoy views of lakes, creeks, and forests refers to the space below the timberline where you can see short, twisted trees shaped by years of icy climate. Near the top, you'll see a variety of additional plant life, including magnificent wildflowers in the summer months.

Hiking Tips

We want to make sure you have the best experience possible here. Keep these tips in mind when you embark on your adventure! Remember to hydrate and bring plenty of extra water.
